About Cambrian Hill
Cambrian Hill is a quiet rural locality situated approximately 8 kilometres south of Ballarat, within the City of Ballarat local government area in central Victoria. Covering just under 11 square kilometres near the Yarrowee River, the settlement was established during the mid-19th century gold rush and named by Welsh miners after Cambria — the Latin derivation of Cymry, the Welsh word for Wales. With a population of around 292 residents, the locality retains a semi-rural character on the southern fringe of greater Ballarat.
Cambrian Hill's rich goldfields heritage is reflected in its landscape, with remnant mining deposits and historic buildings recalling its peak population of over 1,100 in the 1870s. The locality now offers an affordable rural lifestyle within easy reach of Sebastopol and central Ballarat, where residents access a full range of schools, supermarkets, health services, and cultural facilities. Quiet back roads, rural outlooks, and proximity to the Yarrowee River corridor make it a characterful semi-rural address for those seeking space outside the city.
Cambrian Hill falls under postcode 3352 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Wendouree (Western Victoria) electorate.
