About Mount Mercer
Mount Mercer is a sparsely populated rural locality in the Golden Plains Shire, approximately 31 kilometres south of Ballarat and 100 kilometres west of Melbourne in Victoria's Western District. The locality is large in area, covering over 107 square kilometres, yet recorded a population of just 94 residents at the 2021 Census. The landscape is characterised by broad pastoral farmland, with beef and wool production dominating land use across the rolling volcanic plains. Mount Mercer takes its name from a nearby scoria cone, a remnant of Victoria's ancient volcanic history.
The locality is perhaps best known for the Mount Mercer Wind Farm, which became operational in 2014 and features 64 wind turbines across a 2,600 hectare site, generating enough electricity to power approximately 100,000 homes. The nearest town is Dereel, approximately 8 kilometres to the west, while Ballarat provides the full range of regional services including schools, hospitals, shopping, and rail connections. The area is deeply rural in character, appealing to farming families and those who value wide-open spaces and the quiet rhythms of Western District pastoral life. A private vehicle is essential, as public transport does not serve the locality.
Mount Mercer falls under postcode 3352 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Wendouree (Western Victoria) electorate.
