About Camooweal
Camooweal is a remote outback town in north-western Queensland, located 190 kilometres north-west of Mount Isa along the Barkly Highway near the Northern Territory border. Part of the City of Mount Isa local government area, the town recorded a population of 236 at the 2021 Census. Established in 1884, Camooweal developed as an important droving and supply point on the transcontinental stock route, and its historic character is still very much alive today.
Camooweal serves as a last stop for travellers crossing between Queensland and the Northern Territory, with fuel, accommodation, and a pub catering to road trippers on the legendary Barkly Highway. The nearby Camooweal Caves National Park offers extraordinary limestone caverns worth exploring. The pastoral industry remains the economic backbone of the region, with vast cattle stations surrounding the town. Camooweal State School provides education for local children, reflecting the tight-knit nature of this classic outback community.
