About Canaga
Canaga is a large, sparsely populated rural locality in the Western Downs Regional Council area of south-west Queensland, situated approximately 22 kilometres north-east of Chinchilla. Covering nearly 192 square kilometres of open black soil plains country, the locality had a 2021 Census population of 85 residents, with most engaged in broad-acre grain and cattle farming. The locality name derives from the name of an early pastoral run held in the 1850s, reflecting the deep European agricultural history of this part of the Darling Downs.
The Chinchilla-Wondai Road runs east to west through the locality, connecting it to Chinchilla to the south-west and Wondai to the north-east. Chinchilla serves as the main service centre for the district, offering schools, shops, and community facilities. The broader Western Downs region has experienced significant activity from the natural gas and resources sector, with the Surat Basin coal seam gas fields nearby. A former state school, Canaga State School, operated in the locality from 1911 to 1962, and its old site is now a recreation area managed by Western Downs Regional Council.
Canaga falls under postcode 4413 and is governed by Western Downs Regional Council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warrego electorate.
