About Cannawigara
Cannawigara is a rural locality in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia, situated approximately 264 kilometres south-east of Adelaide and 10 kilometres north-west of Bordertown in the Tatiara District Council area. With a population of 147 residents in the 2021 Census, it is a sparsely settled area covering around 179 square kilometres of flat, agricultural land in the state's south-east. The locality name derives from an Aboriginal word meaning a long line of gum trees or a pathway of sticks over soft ground, and was historically one of the six clans of the Tatiara region.
Cannawigara is traversed by the Dukes Highway and the Adelaide–Melbourne railway line, which pass through the locality on their way between Bordertown and the Victorian border. The southern end of the Ngarkat Highway also meets the Dukes Highway at Cannawigara, giving the locality a notable road infrastructure presence despite its small population. Bordertown, the nearest service centre, provides supermarkets, schools, medical services, and other amenities just 10 kilometres to the south-east. The surrounding area is characterised by cereal cropping and grazing properties typical of the South Australian Mallee and Limestone Coast districts.
Cannawigara falls under postcode 5268 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mackillop electorate.
