Captains Flat is a small historic town in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, located approximately 61 kilometres south-east of Canberra and 45 kilometres from Queanbeyan within the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council area. Perched at an elevation of 852 metres along the upper reaches of the Molonglo River, the town has a population of 611 according to the 2021 Census and is set within a large 167 square kilometre rural locality. The settlement's origins date to 1883 when mining for gold, silver, lead, zinc, copper, and iron pyrites drew settlers to the surrounding hills.

Today Captains Flat is a quiet rural township with strong heritage character and a tight-knit community. The surrounding Molonglo River valley and elevated Southern Tablelands landscape attract bushwalkers, nature lovers, and history enthusiasts, with the town sitting in proximity to Tallaganda National Park. Most residents commute to Queanbeyan or Canberra for work and major services, while the town itself retains a charming small-town feel with a local pub, community facilities, and a backdrop of pastoral scenery.
