About Carrajung
Carrajung is a small rural locality in the Gippsland region of eastern Victoria, situated approximately 23 kilometres north of Yarram and 165 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. The locality falls within the Wellington Shire and has a 2021 Census population of 100, with the area historically known for dairying thanks to its high rainfall and fertile soils. The name Carrajung is believed to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning a fishing line or a shade tree, reflecting the area’s deep Indigenous heritage.
The locality encompasses three small settlements — Carrajung, Carrajung South and Carrajung Lower — set amid rolling green hills near the eastern end of the Grand Ridge Road. First settled by Europeans in 1882, the township grew to support a butter factory, hotel and mechanics’ institute by the 1890s. Today Carrajung retains its quiet pastoral character, with the surrounding countryside offering scenic drives, access to the Strzelecki Ranges and proximity to the Hyland Highway connecting Yarram and Traralgon.
Carrajung falls under postcode 3844 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Morwell (Eastern Victoria) electorate.
