About Cassini
Cassini is a rural locality on the north coast of Kangaroo Island, South Australia, within the Kangaroo Island Council local government area. The locality is situated approximately 31 kilometres west of Kingscote, the island's main township, and overlooks Investigator Strait, with the coast about 138 kilometres south-west of Adelaide by air. Covering around 292 square kilometres, Cassini is a predominantly agricultural area with a small population of 73 residents recorded in the 2021 Census, drawn from the island's farming community and a handful of nature-based tourism operators.
The locality is home to Stokes Bay, a sheltered and scenic coastal spot popular with visitors for its rock pool beach and relaxed atmosphere, making it one of Kangaroo Island's quieter coastal gems. Cassini also encompasses Lathami Conservation Park, a protected area proclaimed in 1987 to safeguard critical habitat for the Glossy Black Cockatoo, one of Australia's rarest cockatoos. The surrounding farmland is used primarily for grazing and mixed agriculture, consistent with the broader character of Kangaroo Island. For services, residents travel to Parndana to the south or Kingscote to the east, which offers the island's main supermarkets, medical facilities, and the airport.
Cassini falls under postcode 5223 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mawson electorate.
