About D'Estrees Bay
D'Estrees Bay is a remote coastal locality on the south coast of Kangaroo Island in South Australia, approximately 200 kilometres southwest of Adelaide. Covering around 58 square kilometres, it is a very sparsely populated area within the Kangaroo Island Council. The locality is named after the bay on the island's southern shore, and sits adjacent to the Seal Bay Conservation Park, one of Australia's most significant wildlife reserves.
D'Estrees Bay is best known for its proximity to the Seal Bay sea lion colony, where visitors can walk among Australian sea lions on the beach. The surrounding landscape features rugged coastal cliffs, pristine beaches, and native bush teeming with wildlife including kangaroos, echidnas, and diverse birdlife. There are no local services — the nearest shops and facilities are in Kingscote (60 km) or Penneshaw. The area is primarily visited by tourists and is home to only a handful of farming and conservation properties.
