About Clare
Clare is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Burdekin, North Queensland, situated approximately 34 kilometres south-west of Ayr and 89 kilometres south-east of Townsville. The locality covers a substantial 114 square kilometres of flat, low-lying land at around 20 metres above sea level, with the Burdekin River forming its eastern boundary. With a 2021 Census population of 201 people, Clare is a sparsely settled agricultural locality within one of North Queensland's most productive irrigation farming regions.
The Burdekin Shire is renowned for its sugarcane production, and Clare's surrounding landscapes reflect this agricultural heritage — vast flat fields, irrigation channels, and the wide floodplain of the Burdekin River define the locality. Residents rely on the larger towns of Home Hill and Ayr for services, schools, and shopping. The broader Burdekin region offers a warm tropical climate, freshwater fishing along the Burdekin River, and a tight-knit rural community centred on the sugar industry. Townsville, a major North Queensland city, is accessible within an hour's drive.
Clare falls under postcode 4807 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Burdekin electorate.
