About Coalstoun Lakes
Coalstoun Lakes is a small rural town and locality in the North Burnett Region of Queensland, situated approximately 20 kilometres south-west of Biggenden and 235 kilometres north-west of Brisbane. With a population of 99 at the 2021 Census, the locality spans 51.6 square kilometres of agricultural land in the Wide Bay–Burnett region. The name 'Coalstoun' is a corruption of 'Colstoun', the ancestral Scottish home of the Brown family who were early pioneers of the district.
The standout feature of Coalstoun Lakes is the nearby Coalstoun Lakes National Park, which protects Mount Le Brun — an extinct volcano rising 200 metres above the surrounding cultivated valley. Formed over 600,000 years ago, it is one of the youngest volcanic formations in Australia and its two large craters occasionally fill to form shallow lakes. The locality has a state primary school and the Coalstoun Lakes Memorial Hall, which commemorates local servicemen including a memorial to those who served in the Boer War. Residents enjoy a quiet rural lifestyle surrounded by farming country.
Coalstoun Lakes falls under postcode 4621 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Maryborough electorate.
