About Cobourg
Cobourg is an extremely remote locality on the Cobourg Peninsula in the Northern Territory, situated approximately 200 kilometres north-east of Darwin. With a population of around 32 people, it is one of Australia's most sparsely populated and isolated localities, encompassing over 2,050 square kilometres of pristine wilderness. The peninsula is largely protected as the Garig Gunak Barlu National Park and is jointly managed with the Arnhem Land Aboriginal Land Trust, requiring a special permit to access.
The Cobourg Peninsula is renowned as one of Australia's premier wilderness destinations, offering world-class fishing, pristine beaches, and extraordinary wildlife including saltwater crocodiles, dugongs, and migratory seabirds. Port Essington, the site of a failed British colonial settlement in the 1830s, provides a fascinating piece of history accessible only by boat. The small resident community is primarily associated with park management and Aboriginal custodianship. Visitors require a permit issued by the Northern Land Council, and access is by a challenging dirt track from Darwin or by boat and light aircraft.
Cobourg falls under postcode 822 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Spillett electorate.
