About Coorow
Coorow is a small town in the Mid West region of Western Australia, located approximately 266 kilometres north of Perth and within the Shire of Coorow. The town covers an extensive area of around 258 square kilometres at an elevation of 272 metres, with its townsite first gazetted in 1893. Its name is believed to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning 'many mists' or relating to a local variety of Portulaca. With a population of 179 as recorded in the 2021 Census, Coorow is a modest yet established agricultural community with over a century of history.
The town's economy is anchored by dryland cropping — predominantly wheat, barley, and canola — and sheep farming, characteristic of the WA wheatbelt's northern fringe. Coorow has a general store, primary school, and community facilities that serve both local residents and the broader farming district. The nearby town of Carnamah, some 25 kilometres to the north-west, and Moora, around 84 kilometres to the south, provide additional services for residents requiring more extensive shopping or medical care.
Coorow falls under postcode 6515 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Moore (Agricultural) electorate.
