About Cryon
Cryon is an extremely remote rural locality in the outback of northwestern New South Wales, situated approximately 60 kilometres west of Walgett within the Walgett Shire local government area. Spanning over 563 square kilometres of flat, arid plains, the locality consists almost entirely of large pastoral stations running sheep and cattle across vast, unfenced land. With a population of just 39 residents, Cryon is among the most sparsely populated localities in New South Wales, typifying the isolated beauty of the Barwon–Darling outback.
Life in Cryon is quintessentially outback Australian, with station families managing extensive pastoral properties beneath wide open skies. The Barwon River winds through parts of the region, providing a lifeline for stock and wildlife, and the area's red soil plains support an array of native fauna including kangaroos, emus and diverse birdlife. The nearest services are in Walgett, roughly an hour's drive east, which provides basic retail, medical and educational facilities for the surrounding station communities.
Cryon falls under postcode 2832 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Barwon electorate.
