Located approximately 707 kilometres north-west of Sydney and 75 kilometres north-east of Walgett, the town sits at an elevation of 146 metres on the flat, semi-arid plains of the Upper Barwon catchment. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 634, with social housing accounting for a notable 22.9 per cent of all dwellings — reflecting the town's significant Indigenous community.

Collarenebri is a service centre for the surrounding agricultural district, primarily supporting dryland cropping and pastoral grazing operations. The town has a strong Aboriginal community with deep connections to Ngemba Country, and local history and culture are important parts of the town's identity.
