About Cue
Cue is a small historic gold mining town in the Mid West region of Western Australia, located approximately 620 kilometres north-east of Perth in the Murchison goldfields. The town was established during the gold rush of the 1890s and at its peak boasted a population of around 10,000 people, leaving behind an impressive collection of Federation-era heritage buildings. At the 2021 census, Cue had a population of approximately 140 people, reflecting the dramatic decline following the exhaustion of early gold deposits. Today the town is administered by the Shire of Cue, with its council chambers housed in the historic Gentlemans Club building.
Cue retains a remarkable concentration of heritage-listed stone and brick buildings from its gold rush heyday, making it a significant destination for heritage tourism in outback WA. The surrounding Murchison region continues to attract mineral exploration and gold mining activity, with Westgold Resources operating the Big Bell and Great Fingall mines nearby. The town provides basic services including a roadhouse, pub, and caravan park, catering to travellers on the Great Northern Highway and mining workers. The harsh semi-arid landscape, red dirt roads, and expansive mulga scrubland give Cue an authentic outback character that draws history buffs and adventure travellers.
Cue falls under postcode 6640 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the North West Central (Mining and Pastoral) electorate.
