About Cuttabri

Cuttabri is a tiny rural village in north-western New South Wales, located on the Pilliga–Narrabri Road approximately 26 kilometres west of Wee Waa and 32 kilometres east of Pilliga. Sitting on the banks of the Namoi River, Cuttabri covers nearly 297 square kilometres of flat agricultural and scrubland typical of the Namoi Valley. With a population of fewer than 50 people, it is one of the smallest localities in the region, serving primarily as a rural service point for surrounding pastoral properties. The vast flat terrain is dominated by cotton farming and dryland cropping operations.

Cuttabri is perhaps best known for the historic Cuttabri Wine Shanty, originally established as the Bee Hive Hotel in 1883 and rebuilt after a fire in 1903 — it was a local icon until closing in 2010. The village once had a post office and hotel serving the scattered farming community, reflecting its role as a bush outpost along a well-travelled inland route. Today, the locality attracts occasional travellers exploring the Pilliga Scrub and Namoi River country, as well as those interested in heritage and rural history. Residents live a self-sufficient rural lifestyle, relying on Wee Waa and Narrabri for essential services.

Cuttabri falls under postcode 2388 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Tamworth electorate.
