About Diamantina Lakes
Diamantina Lakes is a vast, uninhabited outback locality in Queensland's remote Shire of Diamantina, covering approximately 21,713 square kilometres of Channel Country terrain. Situated around 1,536 kilometres west-north-west of Brisbane, it encompasses part of Australia's ancient inland drainage system where the Diamantina River flows intermittently southward toward Lake Eyre in South Australia. The landscape is defined by arid flood plains, dry channels, and Mitchell grass downs that transform dramatically after rare rainfall events. It recorded zero permanent residents in the 2021 census, functioning purely as a pastoral and conservation locality.
The locality is home to two significant protected areas — Diamantina National Park in the north-east and Astrebla Downs National Park in the south-west — making it a destination for intrepid outback nature enthusiasts and wildlife photographers. When rains fall, the ephemeral wetlands attract enormous flocks of waterbirds and support populations of rare species including the greater bilby. Pastoral stations manage vast cattle runs across the broader region. Birdsville, the iconic outback town famous for its annual races, is roughly 417 kilometres to the south-west and serves as the nearest significant tourist hub.
Diamantina Lakes falls under postcode 4735 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Gregory electorate.
