About Jundah
Jundah is a remote outback town and locality in the Barcoo Shire of Central West Queensland, situated on the banks of the Thomson River approximately 1,122 kilometres west of Brisbane and 219 kilometres south-west of Longreach. It serves as the administrative centre of Barcoo Shire, covering a vast pastoral area of over 13,000 square kilometres, with a population of 131 recorded in the 2021 Census. Founded in 1883, the town's name derives from a local Aboriginal language word meaning 'woman,' reflecting the deep Indigenous heritage of the region.
Jundah's character is defined by its isolation and the resilience of those who call the Channel Country home, with the local economy centred on pastoral grazing across sprawling station properties. The town has a school, a pub, Barcoo Shire Council offices, and a small number of local services that keep the community self-sufficient. The town also has a history of opal mining in the early twentieth century, and several heritage-listed sites offer a window into its pioneering past.
Jundah falls under postcode 4736 and is governed by Barcoo Shire Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Gregory electorate.
