About Dinner Plain
Dinner Plain is a unique alpine town in Victoria's Alpine Shire, located on the Great Alpine Road approximately 12 kilometres from Mount Hotham Alpine Resort and 387 kilometres north-east of Melbourne. Sitting at an elevation of 1,570 metres above sea level, it is Australia's only alpine village comprised entirely of freehold allotments. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 127 permanent residents, though visitor numbers swell dramatically during the winter ski season.
The village is celebrated for its distinctive architecture and planning, with buildings designed to blend with the snow gum and alpine ash landscape. Dinner Plain attracts both winter skiers seeking a quieter alternative to Hotham and summer visitors who come for mountain biking, walking, and the dramatic high-country scenery. A small collection of accommodation lodges, a general store, and a restaurant serve the community and visitors throughout the year, while the Dinner Plain Cross Country Ski area provides groomed trails in winter.
Dinner Plain falls under postcode 3898 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ovens Valley (Northern Victoria) electorate.
