About Douglas-Apsley
Douglas-Apsley is a national park and gazetted locality on Tasmania's scenic east coast, situated approximately 149 km northeast of Hobart and a few kilometres north of the coastal town of Bicheno. Declared a national park on 27 December 1989, it protects one of the last remaining significant areas of dry sclerophyll forest on Tasmania's east coast, featuring the Douglas and Apsley rivers and a series of beautiful waterholes and gorges. The locality has an effectively zero resident population, as the land is almost entirely protected conservation area managed by Parks & Wildlife Service Tasmania. Its rugged beauty and relative remoteness make it a destination rather than a community.
Douglas-Apsley National Park is a haven for bushwalkers, wildlife enthusiasts, and those seeking quiet natural retreat. The park's highlights include the Apsley Waterhole, the Apsley Gorge, and multi-day walks through dry eucalypt forest teeming with native fauna including Bennett's wallabies, echidnas, and a rich birdlife. Visitors typically base themselves in nearby Bicheno, which offers accommodation, cafes, and the famous Bicheno Blowhole. The park is accessible year-round, with summer and autumn considered the best seasons for walking. There is no permanent residential community within Douglas-Apsley; it exists primarily as a protected natural asset for all Tasmanians and visitors.
Douglas-Apsley falls under postcode 7215 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
