About Gray
Gray is a small rural locality on Tasmania's East Coast, situated within the local government area of Break O'Day approximately 44 kilometres south of the coastal town of St Helens. With a population of 71 residents spread across approximately 34 square kilometres of hilly forested terrain, Gray is a sparsely settled community in the heart of the island's scenic east. The locality shares postcode 7215 with nearby Chain of Lagoons and was gazetted in 1968, having previously been known as Thompsons Marsh.
The Break O'Day River forms part of the south-western boundary of the locality, while the Elephant Pass Road (Route A4) passes through, linking the inland area to the coast. The surrounding landscape is characterised by farmland, eucalypt bushland, and the distinctive rolling topography of Tasmania's east. Residents travel to St Helens for services and shopping, or to Bicheno further south along the coast. The East Coast's appeal as a tourism region, with pristine beaches, bushwalking, and the nearby Bay of Fires, draws visitors through the area year-round.
Gray falls under postcode 7215 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
