About Drillham South
Drillham South is a remote rural locality in the Western Downs region of Queensland, situated within the Western Downs Regional Council area approximately 24 kilometres north-west of Condamine and around 45 kilometres south-west of Miles. The locality is expansive, covering nearly 337 square kilometres of open downs country characterised by grazing and cropping on the fertile soils of the Darling Downs. With a population of 73 residents in the 2021 Census, Drillham South is thinly settled, with scattered farming properties across cleared, flat to gently undulating pastoral land.
The local economy is driven entirely by agriculture, including cattle grazing and grain cropping, with large properties such as Binbian Downs operating cattle breeding enterprises across thousands of hectares. The nearby township of Drillham to the north provides a local focal point, while Miles to the north-east is the main service centre offering schools, a hospital, shops, and the Miles Historical Village and Museum. The Warrego Highway connects the area to Dalby and Brisbane to the east, though a private vehicle is indispensable for all daily travel in this isolated part of Queensland.
Drillham South falls under postcode 4424 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warrego electorate.
