About Durham
Durham is an extremely remote outback locality in Queensland's Bulloo Shire, situated approximately 1,228 kilometres west of Brisbane near the South Australian border. Covering an enormous area of nearly 18,800 square kilometres, Durham is one of the largest and most sparsely populated localities in Queensland, with just 31 residents recorded in the 2021 Census. The landscape is classic Channel Country — vast gibber plains, dry creek beds, and sparse mulga scrub shaped by the ancient drainage of Cooper Creek.
Life in Durham revolves entirely around pastoral cattle station work, with residents on isolated properties that are largely self-sufficient. The nearest town with basic services is Thargomindah, over 240 kilometres to the east. The locality offers extraordinary outback experiences including birdwatching around waterholes, star-gazing under unpolluted skies, and the rare spectacle of floodwaters transforming the dry plains into a vast inland sea. This is one of Australia's most remote and untouched corners.
Durham falls under postcode 4492 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warrego electorate.
