About Thargomindah
Thargomindah is a remote outback town and the administrative centre of Bulloo Shire, located in the far south-west corner of Queensland approximately 193 kilometres west of Cunnamulla. Sitting alongside the Bulloo River, the town covers a vast statistical area exceeding 15,000 square kilometres and had a 2021 Census population of approximately 243 residents. Established in the 1870s and 1880s during the era of wool and pastoral expansion, Thargomindah retains a genuine outback character shaped by its isolation, big skies, and deep connection to the land.
Despite its remote location, Thargomindah provides a surprising range of services for travellers and residents, including motel, hotel and caravan park accommodation, dining options, and a fuel stop — making it an important staging point on Queensland's outback touring routes. The town is notable for being one of the first places in Australia to have electric street lighting, powered by a hydraulic generator using artesian bore water in 1893. The surrounding Bulloo Shire offers exceptional outback tourism, wildlife watching, and access to iconic destinations such as Currawinya National Park.
Thargomindah falls under postcode 4492 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warrego electorate.
