About Edith
Edith is a vast, sparsely settled locality in the Katherine-Daly region of the Northern Territory, covering approximately 1,139 square kilometres of tropical savanna bushland. The locality takes its name from the Edith River, which flows through the area before joining the Daly River system to the west, and sits within the federal electorate of Lingiari and the state electorate of Katherine. With a recorded population of 186 residents across 51 dwellings in the 2021 Census, Edith is typical of the remote pastoral country that characterises this part of the Top End.
The locality is closely associated with Leliyn (Edith Falls), a celebrated natural attraction within Nitmiluk National Park offering tiered swimming holes, walking trails, and striking gorge scenery accessible via a sealed road off the Stuart Highway. The Edith River is also a well-known barramundi fishing destination popular with visitors and locals alike. Day-to-day life revolves around cattle stations and the natural environment, with the regional centre of Katherine around 60 kilometres to the south providing access to shops, schools, medical services, and onward transport.
Edith falls under postcode 852 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Katherine electorate.
