About Ellis Beach
Ellis Beach is a tiny coastal locality on the Coral Sea, situated approximately 25 kilometres north of Cairns in Far North Queensland. Nestled between the rainforest-clad hills of the Macalister Range and the turquoise waters of Trinity Bay, Ellis Beach is one of the northernmost patrolled beaches accessible by road from Cairns. Despite its minuscule permanent population of around five residents, it attracts significant visitor numbers as a beloved day-trip and camping destination.
The locality is anchored by the Ellis Beach Oceanfront Bungalows and Caravan Park, which serves as the social hub for travellers along the Captain Cook Highway. Visitors come for the calm, patrolled swimming beach, snorkelling, and the dramatic scenery where tropical rainforest meets the sea. It forms part of the stunning Tropical North Queensland coastline and sits within the broader Cook Shire tourist corridor, making it a sought-after escape from Cairns city.
Ellis Beach falls under postcode 4879 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Barron River electorate.
