About Emita
Emita is a remote rural locality on Flinders Island, part of the Furneaux Group of islands in Bass Strait, within the Flinders Council local government area of north-east Tasmania (postcode 7255). Located approximately 16 kilometres north-west of the island's main town, Whitemark, Emita spans nearly 55 square kilometres of rugged island landscape and is home to around 59 residents (2021 Census). The area is one of Tasmania's most historically significant localities, as it was the site of the Wybalenna Aboriginal Settlement, where Tasmanian Aboriginal people were relocated by colonial authorities in 1833.
Emita offers an extraordinarily off-grid lifestyle defined by pristine beaches, untouched bushland, and extraordinary wildlife. The Port Davies Boat Ramp provides access to some of Bass Strait's best fishing, and mutton bird (short-tailed shearwater) rookeries at Settlement Point are a seasonal natural highlight. The community is small and self-reliant, attracting those who value solitude, nature, and a deeply connected sense of place far from mainland pressures. Flinders Island Airport at Whitemark provides the only practical link to the Tasmanian mainland.
Emita falls under postcode 7255 and is governed by Flinders Council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Bass (McIntyre) electorate.
