About Ercildoune
Ercildoune is a small rural locality in western Victoria, located approximately 26 kilometres west of Ballarat and around 130 kilometres from Melbourne, within the Ballarat City Council local government area. Covering nearly 88 square kilometres of pastoral and agricultural land near the Western Highway, the locality had a population of 90 at the 2021 Census. The area is characterised by working farms, open grazing country, and a median tax income of around 8,000, typical of the broader rural district.
Ercildoune is best known for the Ercildoune Homestead, one of Victoria's most historically significant pastoral properties. Settled by Scottish brothers Thomas and Somerville Learmonth in 1838, the rambling stone mansion is recognised for its outstanding heritage architecture, including crow-stepped and castellated parapets and a unique walled garden. The locality also sits near Lake Burrumbeet and is within easy reach of Ballarat's full range of shopping, medical, and educational services.
