About Lexton
Lexton is a small historic town in the Shire of Pyrenees in western Victoria, situated on the Sunraysia Highway approximately 161 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 48 kilometres north-west of Ballarat. The town occupies a gently undulating valley landscape typical of the Victorian Central Highlands and sits within a council area that encompasses much of the renowned Pyrenees wine region. With 284 residents recorded in the 2021 Census across 141 square kilometres, Lexton is a small but historically significant rural settlement.
Lexton's history stretches back to the gold rush era — the area was known as Burn Bank from 1848 and attracted travellers heading to the Avoca goldfields, being renamed Lexton in 1854. The Pyrenees Family Hotel remains a community landmark, and the surrounding district supports broadacre farming and viticulture amid the vine-covered hills of the Pyrenees wine region. The nearby town of Avoca, 23 kilometres to the north, provides essential services, while Ballarat's full range of facilities is within an hour's drive.
Lexton falls under postcode 3352 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Wendouree (Western Victoria) electorate.
