About Eungella
Eungella is a small mountain township and locality in the Mackay Region of Queensland, perched at approximately 686 metres above sea level in the mist-shrouded Clarke Range about 80 kilometres west of Mackay. The locality covers around 42 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 190 residents, sitting at the head of the scenic Pioneer Valley within the Mirani state electorate. Eungella's cool, elevated climate and lush subtropical surroundings make it one of the most distinctive communities in Central Queensland.
Eungella is best known as the gateway to Eungella National Park, which protects Australia's longest, oldest stretch of subtropical rainforest across 51,700 hectares and harbours remarkable endemic wildlife — including the Eungella honeyeater, the Eungella spiny crayfish, and the critically endangered Eungella day frog. The locality is renowned throughout Australia as one of the most reliable places to observe wild platypus, particularly at Broken River, drawing nature tourists from across the country. The township offers a small store and guesthouse accommodation, with major services and shopping accessed in Mackay.
