Exeter is a small agricultural town in the West Tamar Council area of Tasmania, located approximately 24 kilometres north of Launceston along the West Tamar Highway. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 759 residents, reflecting notable growth from 633 in 2016, in a community at the heart of the fertile Tamar Valley. The town sits amid a broad rural area renowned for its orchards, dairy and beef cattle farming, fruit production, and sheep grazing.
Exeter is surrounded by the scenic Tamar Valley wine and orchard country, with the area's agricultural heritage evident across its farms, roadside stalls, and produce businesses. Brady's Lookout, approximately 5 kilometres to the south, offers panoramic views over the Tamar River and is a popular visitor stop along the West Tamar Highway. The Exeter Methodist Church, completed in 1861 and the oldest of its kind in Tasmania, speaks to the town's long European settlement history. Launceston's full range of services, schools, and shopping is just a 25-30 minute drive to the south, making Exeter a quiet rural retreat with straightforward access to city conveniences.
