About Holwell
Holwell is a small rural locality situated approximately 43 kilometres north-west of Launceston in Tasmania's Tamar Valley region, falling within the West Tamar Council area. With a recorded population of just 83 residents spread across nearly 31 square kilometres, it is one of the more sparsely settled localities in northern Tasmania. The area is characterised by rolling farmland, scattered bushland, and quiet rural homesteads, offering a peaceful lifestyle well removed from urban centres.
The locality's history stretches back to the late 19th century, when settlers from Holwell in England — including the Roper, Green, Reynolds and Matthews families — arrived and gave the hamlet its name, replacing the earlier name Cotton's Hill. A Wesleyan chapel and school once served the small community, and Holwell Post Office operated from 1891 until 1970. The nearby Holwell Gorge provides a scenic bushwalk through fern-lined terrain, while the town of Exeter, approximately 15 kilometres to the east, offers the nearest basic services and shops. Residents rely on their own vehicles for most daily needs, with Launceston providing the full range of urban services.
Holwell falls under postcode 7275 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (McIntyre) electorate.
