About Four Ways
Four Ways is a remote outback locality in the Shire of Cloncurry, north-west Queensland, situated at the junction of the Burke Developmental Road with the Burketown Road and Wills Developmental Road — the crossroads that give the locality its name. The area covers an extraordinary 6,029 square kilometres of open outback country in the Gulf Savannah region, bounded by the Leichhardt River to the west and the Flinders River to the east. With a 2021 Census population of 76 residents, the locality's permanent settlement is almost entirely associated with the Burke and Wills Roadhouse, which sits at the historic junction approximately 180 kilometres north of Cloncurry.
The Burke and Wills Roadhouse is the centrepiece of Four Ways, serving as a vital stopping point for road travellers crossing the vast outback between Cloncurry and the Gulf of Carpentaria at Normanton, roughly 200 kilometres to the north. The locality takes its name from the intersection of major outback roads, echoing the journey of the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition of 1860-61, which passed through this region. Life here revolves entirely around the roadhouse and the pastoral and mining industries of the wider Cloncurry Shire; Mount Isa, approximately 300 kilometres to the west, serves as the nearest major regional centre.
Four Ways falls under postcode 4824 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Traeger electorate.
