About Gapsted
Gapsted is a small rural locality in the Alpine Shire of north-east Victoria, situated approximately 288 kilometres north-east of Melbourne and around 15 kilometres south of Wangaratta in the productive Ovens Valley. Covering some 54 square kilometres of the Alpine Valleys wine region, the locality encompasses gently undulating farmland and vineyard country set against the backdrop of the Victorian Alps. At the 2021 Census, Gapsted had a population of 156 residents, with a below-average median household income that reflects the largely agricultural and small-scale rural economy of the area.
Gapsted is perhaps best known as home to the Gapsted Estate, a celebrated boutique winery and hospitality venue that draws visitors to the Ovens Valley's renowned food and wine corridor. The broader Milawa–Gapsted district forms part of Victoria's Alpine Valleys wine country, sitting alongside the Brown Brothers winery at nearby Milawa and numerous other cellar doors that attract visitors year-round. Residents enjoy peaceful rural surroundings with the regional services of Wangaratta — including hospitals, schools, and shopping — within a short drive, and outstanding access to alpine tourism via the King Valley and Mount Buffalo National Park.
Gapsted falls under postcode 3737 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ovens Valley (Northern Victoria) electorate.
