About Gawler
Gawler is a historic regional town in South Australia and one of the state's oldest settlements outside of Adelaide, established in 1839 at the confluence of the North and South Para Rivers. Falling within the Town of Gawler local government area, it sits approximately 40 kilometres north of the Adelaide CBD along the Main North Road corridor. The inner suburb has a population of 668 residents and retains a strong working-class and mixed community character, with social housing accounting for around 10 per cent of dwellings.
Gawler's town centre is notable for its well-preserved heritage streetscapes, Victorian-era architecture, and a compact main street with cafes, boutique shops, and services. The suburb is served by Gawler Central Station, the terminus of the Gawler rail line, offering regular Adelaide Metro train services to Adelaide CBD. The Town of Gawler also borders the Barossa Valley wine region to the north-east, making it a gateway for wine tourism and weekend day-trippers. Families, retirees, and commuters are drawn to Gawler's relative affordability, community events, and its blend of regional character with urban rail connectivity.
Gawler falls under postcode 5118 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Schubert electorate.
