About Gidgealpa
Gidgealpa is a vast remote locality in the far north-east of South Australia, situated approximately 780 kilometres north-east of Adelaide within the state's Pastoral Unincorporated Area. The locality encompasses an enormous 33,132 square kilometres of arid outback terrain in the Cooper and Eromanga Basin region, and is best known as the site of the Moomba gas and oil processing facility — a restricted-access company town operated by Santos Limited. The first commercial gas discovery at Gidgealpa was made in 1963, and gas sales to Adelaide commenced in 1969, fundamentally shaping South Australia's energy infrastructure.
The locality's population of around 100 residents (2021 Census) consists almost entirely of Santos operational personnel and contractors living within the Moomba facility, with men comprising the significant majority of residents — reflecting the nature of fly-in fly-out resource sector work. The broader landscape encompasses the Coongie Lakes Ramsar wetland site on the north-western side of the locality, a significant environmental reserve in an otherwise arid region. Gidgealpa is accessible primarily by air via Moomba Airport or via unsealed outback tracks, and the 781-kilometre Moomba to Adelaide Pipeline connects the facility to South Australia's gas network.
Gidgealpa falls under postcode 5731 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Stuart electorate.
