About Leigh Creek
Leigh Creek is a remote outback township situated in the northern Flinders Ranges region of South Australia, approximately 567 kilometres north of Adelaide within the unincorporated Pastoral Unincorporated Area. With a 2021 Census population of 91 residents spread across 31.6 square kilometres, the township is one of the most isolated communities in the state. Leigh Creek was purpose-built in the late 1970s and early 1980s to house workers for the nearby open-cut coal mine, which operated until its closure in November 2015, significantly reducing the local population from a peak of around 2,500 people.
Despite its small size, Leigh Creek retains essential services including a school, medical centre, and a small shopping precinct, making it a base for travellers and station workers exploring the surrounding outback. The township serves as a gateway to the Flinders Ranges — with Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary and the scenic Gammon Ranges nearby — and attracts tourists, four-wheel-drive enthusiasts, and nature lovers passing through on the Outback Highway. The local area is characterised by rugged red landscapes, ancient geological formations, and a strong sense of community among its resilient remaining residents.
Leigh Creek falls under postcode 5731 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Stuart electorate.
