About Glen Niven
Glen Niven is a small rural locality in the Southern Downs Region of Queensland, situated on the Granite Belt near the New South Wales border, approximately 15 kilometres east of Stanthorpe. With a population of 99 at the 2021 Census, the locality covers 8.5 square kilometres of elevated countryside in the Darling Downs region. The area was named after the now-abandoned Glen Niven railway station, which in turn was named after Laurence Niven, a manager at one of the local tin mines that once operated in the district.
Glen Niven's landscape is characterised by the granite outcrops and cool-climate terrain of the Granite Belt, an area renowned for its vineyards, orchards, and stone fruit production. While there are no schools or shops within the locality itself, the nearby towns of Stanthorpe and Applethorpe provide access to primary and secondary schools, supermarkets, and community services. The broader Granite Belt region is a popular destination for wine tasting and agritourism, and residents enjoy a temperate climate with distinct seasons — a rarity in Queensland.
Glen Niven falls under postcode 4377 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Southern Downs electorate.
