About Glenroy
Glenroy is a rural locality in the south-east of South Australia, situated within the Wattle Range Council area approximately 374 kilometres south-east of Adelaide. Covering around 143 square kilometres, the locality lies between the towns of Penola and Millicent in the Limestone Coast region, with the heritage-listed Glen Roy Conservation Park located within its boundaries. With a 2021 Census population of 76 people, Glenroy is a sparsely populated area dominated by pastoral and farming properties.
The locality was once served by the now-closed Wolseley to Mount Gambier railway line, which ceased operations in 1995, and the former Glenroy railway station reflects this heritage. Today, the landscape is used primarily for sheep and cattle grazing, with the wider Wattle Range Council area also supporting forestry and timber industries. Millicent, approximately 35 kilometres to the south, is the nearest town with supermarkets, schools, and community services. Residents of Glenroy depend entirely on private vehicles, and the locality is best suited to those involved in agricultural work who appreciate a quiet, rural way of life in the Limestone Coast region.
Glenroy falls under postcode 5277 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mount Gambier electorate.
