About Monbulla
Monbulla is a rural locality in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia, situated approximately 10 kilometres west of Penola and 330 kilometres south-east of Adelaide, within the Wattle Range Council area. Spanning nearly 157 square kilometres, the locality has a population of around 122 residents and is set within gently undulating pastoral country bordered by conservation reserves and productive farmland. The area is part of the historic Hundred of Monbulla, with settlement dating to the late nineteenth century — Monbulla Public School opened in 1894, though it has since closed.
Monbulla's landscape encompasses the Penola Conservation Park, a protected area of native scrub and stringybark woodland that forms part of the broader Southeast SA conservation corridor. The locality sits at the edge of the world-famous Coonawarra wine region, making it an interesting rural address with proximity to premium winemaking estates and associated tourism. Penola, just 10 kilometres east, provides residents with schools, medical services, shops, and connection to the broader Wattle Range district, while Mount Gambier — the regional hub of the Limestone Coast — is approximately 55 kilometres to the south.
Monbulla falls under postcode 5277 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mount Gambier electorate.
