About Gobur
Gobur is a small farming locality in north-eastern Victoria, situated approximately 97 kilometres north-east of Melbourne and 26 kilometres north of Alexandra within the Murrindindi Shire. With a 2021 Census population of just 102 residents, the area is characterised by spacious rural properties, grazing land, and eucalypt bushland across its 68 square kilometres. The locality takes its name from Gobur Creek, possibly derived from an Aboriginal word for kookaburra.
The area's history dates back to the 1840s pastoral era and a brief gold rush along Godfrey's Creek in 1868, which at its peak attracted around 650 miners. Today, Gobur's appeal lies in its peaceful rural setting, surrounded by eucalypt-studded hills and seasonal creeks with views towards the Great Dividing Range. The nearest services and schools are in Alexandra, while the historic mechanics' institute hall, opened in 1888, stands as a reminder of the community's enduring heritage.
Gobur falls under postcode 3719 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Eildon (Northern Victoria) electorate.
