About Yarck
Yarck is a small town in the upper Goulburn Valley region of Victoria, situated in the Shire of Murrindindi approximately 166 kilometres north-east of Melbourne. Located on the Maroondah Highway, 14 kilometres north-west of Alexandra, Yarck occupies a scenic position in the ranges with a total area of around 87 square kilometres. With a population of around 194 residents at the 2021 Census, it is a genuine small country town with a character shaped by its agricultural surroundings and its location along a major highway route into Victoria's north-east.
Despite its size, Yarck has a surprisingly active local hub — facilities include a general store, a hotel, two cafes, a bookstore, and a bakery, making it a popular rest stop for travellers on the Maroondah Highway heading towards Mansfield and the alpine areas. The town once had a railway station on the Tallarook branch line, which operated from 1890 until its closure in 1978. Surrounded by rolling hills and farmland, Yarck offers a relaxed country lifestyle with easy access to the recreational opportunities of the Yea Valley, Lake Eildon, and the Victorian High Country.
