About Gosse
Gosse is a sparsely populated rural locality on Kangaroo Island, situated in the Kangaroo Island Council local government area in South Australia, approximately 175 kilometres south-west of Adelaide. The locality spans nearly 293 square kilometres of the island's interior, encompassing farmland and remnant native bush. With fewer than 30 residents, Gosse is one of the quietest localities on Kangaroo Island, which itself is Australia's third-largest island. The area has historical significance as the site proposed for a post-World War I soldier settlement town that was never established.
Gosse appeals to those who embrace remote island living and a strong connection to the land and sea. Kangaroo Island is world-renowned for its extraordinary natural attractions including Flinders Chase National Park, Seal Bay Conservation Park, and abundant wildlife, all accessible from the island's interior. Residents rely on Kingscote — the island's main town — for everyday services and the SeaLink ferry from Penneshaw connects the island to Cape Jervis on the mainland. The island lifestyle is deeply rural, self-reliant, and appeals to farmers, tourism operators, and nature lovers.
Gosse falls under postcode 5223 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mawson electorate.
