About Goulburn Weir
Goulburn Weir is a small rural locality in northern Victoria situated on the Goulburn River, approximately 8 kilometres north of Nagambie and around 130 kilometres north of Melbourne CBD, within the Strathbogie Shire local government area. Covering just under 20 square kilometres, the locality takes its name from the historic Goulburn Weir, a significant piece of Australian engineering history built between 1887 and 1891. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 90 residents, reflecting its small and largely seasonal character.
The Goulburn Weir is a major recreational drawcard for the region, offering fishing, swimming, and camping along the Goulburn River, and attracting visitors from across Victoria during warmer months. The weir was the first major irrigation diversion structure built in Australia and featured on early Australian banknotes, making it a landmark of national significance. The nearby township of Nagambie provides access to shops, cafes, the renowned Nagambie Lakes, and the wider Nagambie wine region, with its numerous wineries and cellar doors.
Goulburn Weir falls under postcode 3608 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Euroa (Northern Victoria) electorate.
