About Goulds Country
Goulds Country is a remote rural locality in the Break O'Day local government area of north-east Tasmania, situated approximately 21 kilometres north-west of St Helens and around 147 kilometres east of Launceston. The locality covers some 80.8 square kilometres of hilly forested terrain, through which the George River and Great Musselroe River both flow, creating a landscape of significant natural character. With a 2021 Census population of 91 residents, Goulds Country is one of the smallest inhabited localities in Tasmania, with a history linked to former tin mining activity at sites once known as Dumara or Kunnarra.
Today the area is characterised by its remoteness, natural bush setting, and a handful of rural properties spread across a lightly settled landscape. The Tasman Highway (A3) provides the main road access to the locality and connects residents to St Helens, the nearest service town offering shops, schools, medical services, and the popular Bay of Fires coastal area. Those drawn to Goulds Country typically value privacy, bushland living, and the spectacular northeast Tasmanian scenery of river valleys, forested ridges, and proximity to George Town and the Bay of Fires without the crowds of the more visited coastal centres.
Goulds Country falls under postcode 7216 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (McIntyre) electorate.
