About Green Island
Green Island is a small coral cay and national park located approximately 27 kilometres northeast of Cairns in Far North Queensland, sitting within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The island spans just 12 hectares and is one of only a handful of coral cay islands in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, making it a unique and ecologically significant locality. With a resident population of around 20, it is primarily a tourism and conservation destination rather than a permanent residential community.
Green Island is world-renowned for its exceptional snorkelling and diving opportunities, offering visitors direct access to vibrant coral reefs from the beach. The island features the Green Island Resort, glass-bottom boat tours, an underwater observatory, and guided reef walks. Day-trippers and overnight guests can experience pristine beaches, dense tropical rainforest, and protected marine life, making it one of the most visited natural attractions in Queensland.
Green Island falls under postcode 4871 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Traeger electorate.
