About Gregory
Gregory (formerly Gregory Downs) is a small outback town and locality situated on the banks of the perennial Gregory River in the Shire of Burke, Far North Queensland, approximately 2,014 kilometres north-west of Brisbane, 306 kilometres north of Mount Isa, and 120 kilometres south-south-west of Burketown. Located deep in the Gulf Country, the locality covers an enormous area of over 10,500 square kilometres with a population of 122 residents according to the 2021 Census, reflecting its vast pastoral landscape and sparse settlement. The Gregory River was named by explorer William Landsborough in 1861 after Augustus Charles Gregory, the first Surveyor General of Queensland.
Gregory is anchored by Gregory Downs Station, one of the region's most significant cattle properties, carrying approximately 30,000 Brahman cattle across 266,425 hectares with an 85-kilometre frontage to the Gregory River. The locality is a popular destination during the dry season for 4WD travellers, canoeists, and outback adventurers drawn to the scenic Gregory River and the surrounding Gulf savanna country. The remote lifestyle, extreme distances, and reliance on cattle grazing define the character of this quintessentially outback Queensland community.
Gregory falls under postcode 4830 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Traeger electorate.
