About Gangalidda
Gangalidda is a remote coastal locality in far north-west Queensland, situated on the Gulf of Carpentaria shoreline within the Aboriginal Shire of Doomadgee. Covering nearly 280 square kilometres, the area lies approximately 125 kilometres north of Doomadgee and over 2,200 kilometres north-west of Brisbane, making it one of Australia's most isolated localities. The 2021 census recorded no usual residents, as the land comprises traditional country of the Ganggalidda people, managed under native title arrangements. The landscape is defined by tidal flats, mangrove estuaries, and open tropical savanna running to the Gulf coast.
Gangalidda holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for the Ganggalidda people as part of their ancestral sea and saltwater country along the Gulf of Carpentaria. The surrounding waters are among Australia's most productive for barramundi and other tropical fish species, and the area forms part of a broader Indigenous land management and ranger programme. Access is extremely remote, with the nearest services in Doomadgee accessible via unsealed roads that may be impassable in the wet season. The locality is not a destination for conventional settlement but represents a significant stretch of protected and culturally managed coastline.
Gangalidda falls under postcode 4830 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Traeger electorate.
