About Guluguba
Guluguba is a small rural settlement in Queensland's Western Downs Region, straddling the Leichhardt Highway midway between the towns of Miles and Wandoan. Covering a substantial 387 square kilometres of grazing and cropping country, the locality had a population of just 86 residents at the 2021 Census, reflecting the sparse settlement pattern typical of inland Queensland. The name Guluguba is believed to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning squatter pigeon. Guluguba sits roughly 327 kilometres west-north-west of Brisbane.
Once a mixed-cropping area, Guluguba today is known primarily for premium beef cattle and grain production, with farming families spread across large pastoral holdings. The locality has a rich railway history — Guluguba station opened in 1914 as part of the Wandoan line, and the old post office dates to 1916 — though the rail line no longer carries passengers. Essential services are accessed in Miles to the south or Wandoan to the north, both of which have schools, fuel, and basic supplies. Guluguba suits those who embrace the quiet rhythms of outback agricultural life far from urban centres.
Guluguba falls under postcode 4418 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Callide electorate.
